“Kay Nielsen was a Danish artist who lived from 1886 – 1957. He studied at the Academie Julian in Paris and then moved to London and began working on book illustrations and stage design. Kay worked with pen, ink and watercolors and was known for his unique “fantastical landscapes and uncanny characters”. Kay was successful at making gift books until the “publishing boom prior to World War One” came to and end and he watched his opportunities fade away as publishers strayed from expensive book production and fantasy illustrations. He had a small stint in Hollywood and was hired on by Disney for story sketches and his drawings were used in the “Night On Bald Mountain” sequences in the film ‘Fantasia’. “Nielsen worked for The Walt Disney Company for 4 years, from 1937 to 1941 before being let go”. He returned to Denmark looking for employment there, but his work was no longer in demand and he spent his last years in poverty. He tried his hand at chicken farming, but was unsuccessful and began working on murals for schools and churches. “He eventually died penniless and in obscurity, only to be rediscovered years later”.
